Ultimate Fulfillment 25

by Christopher Lovejoy on September 28, 2014

Alone with myself, all one with myself, in silent meditation, sitting quietly in contemplation of my natural surroundings, I have no need of pretense. I am wholly present as I am, where I am.

Pretense, for me, comes into play when …

Now there’s an interesting sentence stem.

I don’t know about you, but I sense (rather strongly) the importance of coming to terms with pretense in my own life, in my own world, for my own fulfillment as a person.

When I google the string, “define:pretense”, and peruse the results, I am strangely relieved by them, noting that the definitions and examples are intelligent and precise.

The most basic definition presented – “an attempt to make something that is not the case appear true” – is a good starting point for what I wish to do in this (and subsequent) posts.

For the sake of clarity (and complexity, as novelty and variety thrive on complexity), I would extend this definition as follows: “any attempt to make something that is not the case appear …”:

  • … real (metaphysical)
  • … true (epistemological)
  • … good (moral)
  • … sane (psychological)
  • … right (political)
  • … pure (aesthetic)
  • … sacred (religious)
  • … divine (spiritual)

From both a logical and intuitive vantage point, the order in which I present these qualified definitions make sense to me, as if one item in this list is resting on the ones that come before it.

In reading and contemplating this list, I am prompted to wonder: wouldn’t it be easier just to be present to what is real and true and good, et cetera, and forget about pretense altogether?

I definitely agree that it would be easier, but … if there is one thing I’ve learned about this world (beyond my experience of this world that I create for myself – they are not synonymous) is that the inhabitants of this world are, for the most part, pretentious, meaning that “the inhabitants of this world (a world with a long and sordid history of cruelty and brutality), rely heavily on pretense, on keeping up appearances, to get them through the day.” This is not to be construed as a judgment, but merely as an observation. I know that I have relied on pretense to negotiate or navigate strange or difficult situations and I suspect that I will continue to do so, at least until I figure out how to be wholly present to any and all encounters and experiences (or whether being wholly present all the time is even desirable, and if it isn’t, cultivating a beneficial relationship with pretense).

In previous posts, I have construed gradations of pretense as a cosmic field of play with the understanding that pretense can be serious (and seriously twisted), but I invite you to understand and realize that, from a cosmic perspective, from a perspective that declares “we never die”, all pretense is play. Viewed in this light, we can much more easily keep up appearances while negotiating pretense in others with presence, all the while cultivating a protean game face with mercurial yet beneficent intentions projected from a True Self with a mature ego at its core.

field-of-play-2-+-canvasLet us now revisit my interpretation of the cosmic field of play, but this time with an added feature. In this interpretation, I’ve added a white space behind the field to denote the influence of presence on pretense. Here, I’m talking about a cosmic presence (Presence, if you will) that many souls encounter when they experience a lucid death, when those souls who undergo hypnotic regression in a superconscious state come face to face with a Council of Elders, when souls raise consciousness with a sacred ritual or a divine substance, when they project astrally into a place or space full of presence, or when they surrender gratefully to the presence of a spontaneous mystical peak experience.

This cosmic presence goes by many names, but for the sake of discussion, I prefer the simple use of Presence, which is not to be confused or conflated with the mere presence (or power) of Now.

Presence, in my view, holds divine clues to the realization of the ultimate in personal fulfillment. Presence is not only intelligent, Presence is also (first and foremost) beneficent. Presence is anything (or anyone) you wish Presence to Be (even an old man with a long white beard – or perhaps a magnificent goddess of love and beauty, truth and wisdom?). In my current view, Presence is not a child, a mere fractal of a larger parental Presence seeking to perfect Itself through us, nor is Presence a collective of individual presences presenting as One. Rather, I view Presence as The One, whose reach is far greater in scope and extent than any one of us can imagine (or care to imagine).

divine-attributesHerewith, my interpretation of Presence: it would be rather presumptuous of me to say that these seven divine attributes are the only ones (or even the main ones) that describe the Essence of Presence. I’ve chosen these divine attributes – presence, promise, possibility, truth, love, power, and wonder – as the ones that, if embodied fully in human form, would burn away much if not most pretense (or at least bring us into right relationship with pretense, both with the phenomenon of pretense and with the conduct of pretense). The black circle behind the starburst (Presence) is not offered merely for contrast; it also serves a vital function, both for Presence and for those fortunate enough to have Presence guide their lives. Known in some circles as The Black Sun, this void, if you will, exerts a pull on Presence not unlike the black hole that is thought to serve as an anchor at the centre of our Milky Way galaxy. I call this void, for lack of a better term, Absence, which I understand as being integral to Presence. In my view, Absence is not malevolent in and of itself, but it is inherently (extremely) powerful and can be utilized for malevolent purposes under the banner of dark pretense. It could very well be that a dark entity inhabits and rules inside Absence that is equal to (or almost equal to) the power and intelligence of Presence and is diametrically opposed to the beneficence of Presence, but I honestly can’t be sure. I’m inclined to think so, given what I know about the ubiquity of evil in this world and the various attempts that have been made to neutralize it, but I’m also careful to note the tendency of fear and ignorance and delusion to project as dark pretense. If nothing else, the presumed existence of an all-powerful evil entity makes for interesting drama, but in saying this, I also appreciate that I could very well be minimizing (wrongly, stupidly) something that requires careful handling. Respect difficulty, yes, but also respect the serpentine (and often subtle) influence of evil intent.

Here are two profound questions to consider: could it be that the contrast between Presence and Absence, between Light and Dark, is absolutely necessary for spiritual beings in human form to experience a sense of freedom? Could it be that the reason love is so vitally important to Presence is to keep the balance tipped in favor of Light (or even to maintain it so as to preserve some sense of freedom?).

In my next post, I begin the task of bringing a human interpretation to the cosmic field of play with the addition of the white space (and the void behind it) depicting the pull of presence on pretense.

Note: I’ve added an index of posts in this series to the outline below for my own purposes but also for the benefit of those who would like to access selected topics from earlier posts. I call this index “my index of recovery and discovery” for the heart of my soul and for the soul of my spirit, respectively.

I’ve added an asterisk to my favorite and, in my view, most significant posts so far.

The Ultimate
in
Personal Fulfillment

a message for our times: “be true, be wise, be free; love is the key”

Context

(Setting the context)

The syntactical nature of reality, the real secret of magic,
is that the world is made of words, and if you know the words that the world is made of,
you can make of it whatever you wish ~ Terence McKenna

consider this truth: “there is no truth”: true or false? if true, then false; if false, then true

words are powerful, as and when they are spoken in the light of truth, love, and wisdom

Basis

(A cosmic perspective)

First installment: the cosmic life review (learn more)
Second installment: a cosmic perspective on birth, life, and death

Current study: fate, birth, life, death, and destiny in context

Essence

The ethical imperative: guard guide your eyes, guard guide your thoughts, guard guide your steps

What the cosmic life review indicates we do in the earthly realm: (1) justify; (2) purify; (3) sanctify

Does “what does it take to be fulfilled?” = “what does it take to be justified, purified, sanctified?”?

Ideals

Proposal: our prime directive as a species is finding the balance

  • finding the balance between soul (being) and spirit (becoming)
  • finding the balance between being perfectly full and becoming perfectly filled
  • finding the balance between living soulfully (truly, deeply) and living spiritually (wisely, freely)

Integration

(A context for living life to the fullest)

proposal to universalize human need:

need 1: “a safe place to eat and sleep”
need 2: “a way to satisfy all my needs”
need 3: “someone to love and cherish”
need 4: “a healthy, vital outlook on life”

a vital distinction to observe in daily life:
satisfaction of need v. fulfillment of desire

the body is but a vessel for soul,
serving to contain all that the soul needs;
the body is but a vehicle for spirit,
serving to convey all that the spirit desires;

how might body serve to contain and convey
both soul and spirit as vessel and vehicle?

soul spirit

unity harmony
peace bliss
love joy
being becoming
loving caring
intimacy ecstasy
quality vitality

promise possibility

Application

(A practice for living life to the fullest)

exploring …

the ways and means by which I can be centred in love
the ways and means by which I can follow (or manifest!) a path with heart
the ways and means by which I can be love truly and wisely

if the first pointer serves to expose the truth of who and what I am,
and if the second serves to reveal the meaning, purpose, and direction of my life,
then the third serves to realize a dynamic balance between my soul and spirit

the three deep, dark fears of spiritual beings in human form

1) a fear of letting go during sexual orgasm (the sexual fear)
2) a fear of losing control, of losing one’s mind (the political fear)
3) a fear of dying in pain, in anguish, in misery (the religious fear)

Commentary

(a global perspective: why is humanity failing to fulfill its true potential?)

weaving a terrestrial narrative that aligns with a cosmic perspective, including historical, interdimensional, extraterrestrial, conspiratorial, and eschatological elements, is an exhaustive process

such a terrestrial narrative would have us explore and expose the causes and consequences of two widespread (and related) social phenomena: cynical detachment and egocentric entitlement

the story of Howard Storm: how a visit to The Other Side cured his soul and spirit of cynical detachment and egocentric entitlement, transmuting his contempt for humanity into compassion and compersion

If darkness is your problem, talking about darkness won’t help.
If darkness is your problem, nothing can be done about darkness directly.
You cannot throw it out, you cannot push it out, you cannot switch it off.
Darkness is an absence. Nothing can be done about it directly.
If you have to do anything, you have to do something with the light, not with darkness.

~ Osho (Fear: Understanding and Accepting the Insecurities of Life, p. 136)

Questions

1. “I just can’t stand it anymore … why go on?”

2. “Wrong body, wrong family, wrong planet … why?”

3. “Why am I making such a mess of my life?”

4. “What does it really take to be (become) fulfilled in this life?”

5. Soul: “a sound approach to being perfect: possible?”

6. Spirit: “a sane approach to becoming perfect: desirable?”

7. The ultimate in truth, love, and power: dare we ask?

Study Notes

  • incorporate the use of symbols with these elements: sphere (soul), spiral (spirit), pyramid
  • presence and pretense: best to view them as complementary, rather than as mutually exclusive?
  • follow these elements of perspective: form, structure, substance, orientation, appearance
  • the devil challenge (problem, difficulty, obstacle, inadequacy, struggle, conflict) is in the details
  • the privileged among us: a little too preoccupied with celebrity, technology, personality, positivity?
  • extroverts and introverts: “living on the surface” and “living from the depths with presence”
  • the cosmic life review: a representation of the ultimate in personal fulfillment for a life lived?
